HiPristin

Well… by a girl group, at least (I don’t use boy groups, don’t @ me).

PRISTIN are Pledis Entertainment’s latest girl group (RIP After School). The girls have been in the K-industry for several years now, making cameo appearances in music videos for SEVENTEEN and Orange Caramel. Seven of PRISTIN‘s ten members (Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung and Xiyeon) notably took part in the talent survival show Produce 101, where they competed alongside 101 agency trainees to debut in the group I.O.I; Nayoung and Kyulkyung made it to the final cut. Meanwhile, Yehana was doing backup dancing for SEVENTEEN. The group actually promoted under the template name Pledis Girlz throughout 2016, with the genius decision to hold random concerts to establish a fan base. On January 6th 2017, “BYE & HI” was their last concert as Pledis Girlz – it was ‘BYE’ to Pledis Girlz, and ‘HI’ to PRISTIN. The new group name is a combination of the words “prismatic” (Katy Perry‘s impact) and “elastin”, and is not to be confused with the fish oil brand of the same name.

After a week of traditional teasers, PRISTIN made history by dropping their introductory mini album, the aptly title Hi! PRISTIN. The six track collection features the typical K-assortment of doo-wop ‘bops’, urban bangers, and stunning heartfelt manufactured ballads. But it’s Hi! PRISTIN‘s title track, “Wee Woo”, which demands all of the attention.

“We are PRISTIN!”, they cheerily declare at the start of “Wee Woo”. The bop is funky, glamorous, and irresistibly catchy – everything that made K-pop the most exciting genre on the planet. “Wee Woo” gets the balance of aegyo and sassiness absolutely perfect. Plus, it’s a huuuge ear-worm. From the second that charming bass line hits your ears (which Sungyeon helped compose, legends only), you will be hooked on “Wee Woo”. Of course, let’s not neglect the chorus’s abnormally infectious “wee woo wee woo wee!”, which is catchier than chlamydia at a Grindr sex party. The police sirens in the background of “Wee Woo” are a warranted addition to the bright production, a brilliant compliment to lyrics like “Ring ring, hello? / Can you send an ambulance here?”; it’s the ultimate warning that PRISTIN have arrived to end your faves.  What’s TWICE? Nugudan? They were found dead.

PRISTIN are the new noonas in charge, and the princess of this house.
